Hashtags

and why you're probably using them all wrong

#betterwork

The concept behind the social media hashtag is to own your space on the feed. A thread, a conversation, that your tribe can engage in and follow.

That’s it. That’s my social media advice. I’m sure there are many self-proclaimed experts out there writing blogs right now on how to hashtag your way to ecommerce growth.

For you, social media is all about giving people an inside view of your business. The inner workings. The people. The conversations. The process. Past products. Future products. Your own reality TV channel (without the repugnant desire of attention seekers).

It blends nicely with your email marketing objective as a storyteller. Email and social work well together and yet most brands treat them as isolated channels.

Take Jeff Sheldon the founder of Ugmonk as one example. He shares stories on the build of his new warehouse. He introduces what he's up to through email. He uses Instagram to carry on the conversation.

Again, it's all about getting people to buy into you. Not just to buy from you. You're building for the long haul here.

Well, I found the warehouse build fascinating anyway...
